Story behind the site
If you know me, you'll know that surprises and I have a complicated relationship. Think "oil and water," "pizza and pineapple" (which, by the way, we both love – don't judge!), and "commerce students and functional websites." You get the idea. I'm the person who cringes at the thought of jumping out from behind a door, and receiving a gift (or sometimes even a compliment) in front of an audience? Forget about it. Awkwardness level: off the charts.
And then there's Vijay. Mr. Grand Gestures. Mr. Let's Fly 14,000 Miles to surprise the wife for Valentine's Day (2022) & Mr. Surprise Road Trip to Karaikudi, Just Because (Valentine's Day 2023).
This man even did a 40-minute stand-up routine at our wedding about how we met! (It was hilarious, by the way)
So, yeah, Vijay loves surprises (mostly giving them, because he's also a bit awkward about receiving them). And from the moment we met, I've been the anti-surprise person. I'd tell myself I am too cool for romantic gestures, but thanks to Vijay's persistent dedication to surprise-giving, I'm... well, I'm less terrified now.
Which brings us to this website. This year, I decided to surprise Vijay. (nothing outdoors because we are around each other all the time and I know his schedule too well) It had to be something new. Something that doesn't come naturally to me. Building a website is about as challenging for me as pulling off a surprise or keeping a secret.
I'm also someone who dreams big but sometimes struggles with follow-through. But this time, fueled by sheer determination and wanting to see Vijay's smile, I dedicated three days to building this website. (Okay, "building" might be a slight exaggeration – Wix deserves the real credit.)
We share snippets of our lives on social media, but with my line of work, I didn't want to be one of those people who only shares the highlights of life. So, this website is our little digital time capsule. A place where we can revisit our favorite memories, a tiny corner of the internet just for us. Consider it a permanent Valentine's Day card. And a testament to the fact that even a valentine's day grinch can pull off a surprise.
